Putting a Stop to Enamel Erosion
Enamel erosion is the name for weakened tooth enamel that makes your smile vulnerable to dental issues, like cavities and fractures. Tooth enamel is the toughest substance in the human body, but it can be compromised. To help prevent dental erosion, our dentist, Dr. Kenneth Kowalski, has some tips for you.
-Avoid acidic foods and drinks. The acid attacks and weakens your tooth enamel and makes your teeth vulnerable to decay and chips and cracks. So, it’s best to stick with a balanced diet.
-Use fluoride. Fluoride strengthens the tooth enamel Fluoride may have been added to your local water system, but you should still make sure that your teeth receive fluoride regularly by using a fluoride mouthwash and toothpaste, and by talking with your dentist about whether or not you or members of your family need fluoride supplements or treatments. Your dentist will be able to advise you after an exam, and fluoride treatments are simple procedures.
-Wait half an hour to brush. It’s best to wait for 30 minutes to brush after you have consumed an acidic food or beverage, to give your saliva time to neutralize and wash away the acid.
